Poland: EUR 29m for Wolsztyn

December 2007.

The railway line Poznan - Wolsztyn (67 km) will be modernised at the cost of EUR 29m. The historical line, built at the beginning of 20th century, is supposed to attract more tourists. Today the line falls into ruin.

The "youngest" devices or tracks are older than 20 years. Without a signifiacant money injection the line would have to be closed in 2010.

Now, as the train cannot run faster than 70 km/h, it takes 96 minutes to travel from
Poznań to Wolsztyn, just 67 km.

Now the
marshalls office with the support from the EU decided to invest EUR 29m.

The railways want to lease some retro devices and infrastructure, including the buildings.

The modernised line is supposed to become the unique railway museum. Currently the main attraction is the locomotive depot in Wolsztyn, visited by thousands rail enthusiasts every year.

The works will start in 2009.
