Germany / Russia: Railion starts first rail ferry operations between Germany and Russia

After numerous test trips in recent months, Railion’s new regular rail ferry operations to the port of Baltijsk near Kaliningrad have begun on schedule.
The ferry FS Vilnius, which has a capacity of 85 Russian rail cars or 108 truck trailers, has already been providing rail ferry services between the German port of Sassnitz-Mukran and the Lithuanian port of Klaipeda since July 2006, eyefortransport.com reports.

Now it will make a weekly transit between Sassnitz-Mukran and the port of Baltijsk near Kaliningrad, a crossing that takes about sixteen hours.

Sassnitz-Mukran is the biggest rail ferry port in Germany, and the only port in Central Europe that can handle shipments using Russian wide gauge rail cars.

The service is provided under the auspices of a partnership between Railion Deutschland, Danish shipping company DFDS and the Russian railroad.

According to Railion board member Eckart Fricke, the use of the CIM consignment note on the sea crossing, and for the leg of the journey between the ferry and the Baltijsk rail station, speeds up operations considerably, enabling shipments to be carried into Russia as goods in transit.

The rail ferry service by way of Sassnitz-Mukran and Baltijsk is a useful supplement to the effective land route using what is known as Corridor II – going through Poland to Belarus.
